Sacramento's public library governing board agreed to pay library director Anne Marie Gold nearly $25,000 in return for her resignation, documents obtained by The Bee indicate, and the county grand jury already has signaled that it is investigating that agreement.

Former NBA star Kevin Johnson received a deposit in the political bank today. It came in the form of a ringing endorsement from Sacramento's largest newspaper, The Sacramento Bee.

Vlade Divac Will Serve In Serbian Government
BELGRADE, Serbia -- Former NBA star Vlade Divac has become an adviser in Serbia's government.
The 40-year-old said he will be in charge of humanitarian issues and sports, and will work with Vice Premier Ivica Dacic.

HAYWARD (CBS 5) ? Department store chain Mervyns LLC will announce Friday that it is filing for chapter 7 bankruptcy protection — which means the Hayward-based retailer must shut its doors and liquidate its inventory.

Two huge wildfires driven by strong Santa Ana winds burned into neighborhoods near Los Angeles on Monday, forcing frantic evacuations on smoke- and traffic-choked highways, destroying homes and causing at least two deaths.
